Local know-how
What a Tauranga garden needs through the year
Tauranga's warm, humid climate means gardens grow almost all year. That's good for plants and good for weeds, so the key to an easy garden here is regular small visits, not big clean-ups.
A few weeds cause most of the trouble in local gardens. Oxalis comes back from tiny bulbs, so it has to be dug out, not pulled. Tradescantia, sometimes called wandering willie, roots from every broken piece. Convolvulus winds through shrubs in summer. And kikuyu creeps in from the lawn under the edging. Regular visits catch all of them before they take hold.
Spring Spring
- Main jobs
- Weed before seeds set, feed and mulch beds, prune spring-flowering shrubs after flowering
Summer Summer
- Main jobs
- Keep on top of fast growth, deadhead, trim back kikuyu runners at the edges
Autumn Autumn
- Main jobs
- Cut back perennials, plant new shrubs, tidy for winter
Winter Winter
- Main jobs
- Prune roses and fruit trees, clear leaves, plan for spring
Coastal gardens at the Mount and Pāpāmoa also deal with salt wind, which burns soft new growth. Tougher coastal plants and a good layer of mulch make those gardens much easier to keep.

FAQs
Garden maintenance FAQs
How often should a gardener visit?
Fortnightly for most Tauranga gardens from spring to autumn, monthly through winter. Low-maintenance gardens can go monthly all year.
Is it the same person each time?
Yes. The same crew looks after your garden each visit.
Do you supply plants and mulch?
Yes, if you want us to. We price plants and mulch separately so you know what you're paying for. See mulching and planting.
Can you look after a rental or bach?
Yes. Landlords and bach owners use regular visits to keep a property tidy between tenants or holidays. We text after each visit.
Is there a minimum visit length?
We'll suggest the right visit length when we see the garden, so each visit is long enough to make a real difference and you're never paying for time you don't need.
Do you trim hedges as part of garden maintenance?
Yes. Hedge and shrub trimming can be part of a regular visit, or booked as a one-off when the hedges need a bigger cut.
