Local know-how
Onehunga weed: when to spray in the Bay of Plenty
Onehunga is the low, feathery weed behind the prickles that make spring lawns painful to walk on. It comes up in autumn, grows quietly through winter, then sets its seed heads in spring. Those seed heads are the prickles, and once they harden, they stay sharp until the plant dies off in summer.

That timing is everything. Spray in winter or very early spring, roughly June to August around Tauranga, and the plant dies before it makes a single prickle. Spray in October and you kill the plant, but the prickles it's already set stay in your lawn for weeks.
Keeping it gone is about the grass, not the spray. Onehunga moves into thin, patchy lawns. A feed in autumn and spring thickens the grass so there's less bare ground for seed to land in. On sandy coastal sections in Pāpāmoa and the Mount, nutrients wash through quickly, so we feed a little more often. Heavier inland soils hold their feed longer.
Kikuyu helps too. A thick, healthy kikuyu lawn crowds out a lot of winter weeds by itself, which is why feeding and mowing at the right height matter as much as the spray.
How it works

We identify what's growing
Onehunga, clover and creeping oxalis each need a different approach.
We spray on a calm, dry day
Wind carries spray onto gardens, and rain washes it off before it works.
You keep off the lawn until it's dry, usually a few hours. We'll tell you on the day.

FAQs
Lawn spraying FAQs
Is lawn spray safe for kids and pets?
Once it's dry, yes, when it's applied to label rates. Keep children and pets off the lawn until the spray has dried, usually a few hours. We'll tell you exactly how long on the day.
How long until the weeds die?
You'll see weeds curl and yellow within about a week. Most are gone in two to three weeks. Tough weeds sometimes need a second spray.
Will the spray kill my kikuyu?
No. We use selective sprays that target broadleaf weeds like onehunga and clover and leave lawn grasses alone.
Does weed and feed kill onehunga?
It can set it back, but a targeted selective spray in winter, before the prickles form, is far more reliable.
Can you spray when it's raining?
No. The spray needs a few dry hours to work. If rain is forecast, we move your visit and let you know.
How often should my lawn be fertilised?
Two to four times a year: spring, early summer and autumn, with an extra light feed for sandy coastal lawns.
