Local know-how
How often Tauranga hedges need trimming
Tauranga's warm, wet climate makes most hedges grow faster than they would further south. These are the hedges we see most, and how often they need a trim to stay tidy.

| Hedge | Trims a year | Best timing |
|---|---|---|
| Griselinia | 2–3 | Late spring and late summer |
| Pittosporum | 2–3 | Spring and late summer |
| Photinia (Red Robin) | 3 | After each flush of red growth |
| Lilly pilly | 3–4 | Spring through autumn; it grows fast here |
| Buxus (box) | 2 | Late spring, then late summer |
When to prune buxus. Trim buxus after the spring growth has firmed up, usually November to December, and again in late summer. Pick a dry spell: buxus is prone to box blight in humid weather, and fresh cuts in damp conditions give it a way in.
Don't cut too hard. Most hedges won't regrow from bare wood. Cut one back past its green growth and it can stay bare at the base for good. If a hedge has got too big, we reduce it in stages over a season or two.
Coastal sections. On the Mount and in Pāpāmoa, salt wind burns the seaward side of soft hedges. Griselinia and pittosporum handle it best.

FAQs
Hedge trimming FAQs
How often should hedges be trimmed?
Two to four times a year for most Tauranga hedges, depending on the species. See the table above.
When is the best time to cut back a hedge?
Late spring and late summer for most hedges. Avoid hard cuts in the middle of a hot, dry spell or in winter, when regrowth is slow.
Can you reduce a really tall or overgrown hedge?
Yes. We bring it down in stages, so it regrows green instead of going bare.
Do you take the clippings away?
Yes, always. It's included in the price.
What about a boundary hedge shared with a neighbour?
We can trim both sides with your neighbour's agreement. Many people split the cost.
