Mulching and planting in Tauranga
A mulching service in Tauranga that does the whole job, not just drops off a load. We weed the beds, cut a clean edge, then spread fresh bark mulch at the right depth so it keeps weeds down and moisture in through summer. We can plant new shrubs and groundcovers at the same time, so the beds look finished.

Local know-how
Choosing mulch and plants for Tauranga gardens
When to mulch. Late spring, before the summer dry, is the best time: the soil is still moist and the mulch locks it in. Autumn, after the first good rain, is the next best. Mulching dry soil in February just keeps it dry.

How deep. About 75 mm of bark mulch keeps most weeds down and holds moisture. Less than that and weeds push through; much more and it can rot plant stems and attract slaters.
Coastal sections. On the Mount and in Pāpāmoa, light fine mulch blows away in the first nor'easter. Chunkier bark nuggets stay put. For plants, tough natives like coprosma, flax, pōhuehue and hebe handle salt wind and sandy soil far better than soft exotics.
Inland sections. Heavier soils in places like Bethlehem and Pyes Pā hold water well, so you have more choice. Mulch still pays off there, because a well-mulched bed needs far less weeding.

FAQs
Mulching and planting FAQs
How deep should mulch be?
About 75 mm for bark mulch. Keep it a hand's width away from plant stems and the house.
How often should mulch be topped up?
Once a year for most gardens, usually in spring. Bark breaks down over time and feeds the soil as it goes.
Bark or compost?
Bark for weed control and a tidy look. Compost for feeding the soil in vegetable gardens and new beds. Many gardens do best with compost dug in and bark on top.
Do you supply plants?
Yes, or we'll plant ones you've bought.
When's the best time to plant?
Autumn is best in Tauranga: the soil is warm and the rain is coming. Spring is next best. Summer planting needs a lot of watering.
Does mulch stop weeds?
It stops most new weeds from seeding and makes the rest easier to pull, as long as it's deep enough and the bed is weeded before it goes on. Weeds with deep roots, like convolvulus, can still push through and need pulling or spot-spraying.
