Local know-how

Clearing pest plants on Bay of Plenty sections

A section left for a season or two in the Bay of Plenty doesn't just grow long grass. The warm, wet climate lets a few tough invaders take over fast.

Back garden before a clean-up, with climbers and shrubs grown over the fence
  • Blackberry spreads by arching canes that root where they touch the ground.
  • Pampas forms big clumps with leaves that cut skin.
  • Wild ginger smothers shady banks and spreads from underground roots.
  • Woolly nightshade grows into a small tree within a couple of years.
  • Gorse is prickly, dense and seeds for decades.

Cutting them down makes the section usable straight away, but most will regrow from the roots. For a lasting result, cut first, then spray the regrowth a few weeks later once it's put out fresh leaves. Several of these plants are on the Bay of Plenty Regional Council's pest plant list, so it's worth dealing with them properly rather than just mowing over the top.

FAQs

Section clearing FAQs

How long does it take to clear a section?

A typical overgrown residential section takes a day. Large or very dense sites can take longer, and we'll tell you when we price it.

Do you remove rubbish as well as greenery?

Green waste only. Household rubbish and building waste need a rubbish removal service.

Can you clear a sloping section?

Yes. Steep ground takes longer and is priced to suit; we'll check it from your photos or on a site visit.

Will it grow back?

Grass and weeds will, which is why most people follow up with regular lawn mowing or a spray. Woody pests like blackberry need a follow-up spray to stop regrowth.

Do you clear empty building sites?

Yes. We clear vacant lots before building starts and keep them mown while they're for sale.

Do I need to be there while you clear it?

No. As long as we can get onto the section, you don't need to be there. We'll let you know when it's done.
