New lawns and lawn repair in Tauranga
A new lawn in Tauranga starts with the ground underneath it. We clear the old grass and weeds, prepare and level the soil, then sow seed or lay instant lawn. Bare patches from dogs, shade or old garden beds get the same treatment on a smaller scale. Every new lawn comes with a written aftercare plan, because the first six weeks decide whether it takes. Prices start from $30 per m².

Local know-how
Seed or instant lawn: what works in Tauranga
Instant lawn gives you a finished lawn the day it's laid. It suits a house going on the market, a rental between tenants, or anyone who doesn't want to keep dogs and kids off bare soil. It can go down most of the year, but in the heat of January and February it needs a lot of water to root in.

Seed costs less and grows a lawn suited to your exact spot. In Tauranga the best time to sow is autumn, March to April, when the soil is still warm and the rain comes back. Early spring works too. Summer sowing is hard work, especially on sandy coastal sections in Pāpāmoa and the Mount, where the top few centimetres dry out in an afternoon.
One local catch: kikuyu. If you sow a ryegrass or fescue lawn next to kikuyu, the kikuyu will creep in within a season or two. We'll talk you through whether to keep the kikuyu, fight it, or choose a lawn that lives alongside it.

FAQs
New lawn FAQs
How long before I can walk on a new lawn?
Instant lawn: keep off for about two weeks, until it's rooted. Seed: about six weeks, until it's had two or three mows.
When should I mow a new lawn?
Instant lawn: once it's rooted, usually after about two weeks; give a corner a gentle tug and if it holds, it's ready. Seed: when the grass is about a third taller than the cutting height, usually four to six weeks after sowing.
How often should I water a new lawn?
Lightly every day for the first two weeks, then less often and more deeply. Your aftercare plan sets out exactly how much for your lawn and the season.
When should I fertilise a new lawn?
A starter fertiliser goes down when it's sown or laid. The next feed is about six weeks later.
Can you fix patches from dogs?
Yes. We dig out the dead patch, refresh the soil and re-seed or patch with instant lawn. Watering the spot after the dog uses it helps stop it happening again.
What's the best time of year for a new lawn?
Autumn for seed. Instant lawn any time except the hottest weeks of summer, unless you can water every day.
